Throughout my life I have often found myself in the role of being the friend, or stranger, who is willing to listen, extend compassion, and if asked, offer advice or a new perspective. The feedback from those that took that advice was always that their lives improved and became easier. This was such a normal occurrence for me that I thought this happened to everyone.
Over the years, I realized that this ability was in fact, a gift.
In every job I had I found myself being the confidant for so many. The more self-aware I became the more I realized that my deep empathy and compassion for others was leaving me unfulfilled with my work. And I had a good career - Post Production Project Manager in Los Angeles. But the fact I was a highly sensitive person constantly working in the middle of intense and out of balance work environments left me drained. I didn’t feel like myself. I was constantly struggling with anxiety, depression, low thyroid, digestive issues or adrenal fatigue to name a few.
I was at a breaking point and knew something had to change, so I took a 200-hour yoga certification course in hopes it would improve my life in some way. I took it as a gift to myself. Teaching yoga was a potential bonus, but not end goal.
That training lit my life up in so many ways. And it made me realize I was no longer passionate about my work; I wanted to embrace the natural gifts I had to elevate others lives.
Putting together the pieces of my life’s puzzle helped me to fully realize who I am. I am an empath, that’s a person who can psychically tune in to the emotional experience of a person, place or animal. I am highly sensitive and very intuitive. And if you enjoy metrics, I am also an “INFJ” on the Meyers Briggs Personality grid. This is the rarest personality, and rather than hide it or run from it, I have embraced it.
Becoming aware of these aspects has changed my life. It’s also helped me change other people’s lives because I’m able to connect with them on a much deeper level than most people can. I can see what’s going on within a person and help them bring it out into the world.
Now that I’m aligned with what I was meant to do, I have a better understanding of how to manage the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual parts of me and channel it to be of service to others. I’ve also learned to set healthy boundaries so I can thrive, not just get by without pain or drama.
This is what fills me up and keeps me waking up every morning excited about who I'll be able to empower, guide, serve, or lift up that day.
Is it you?
Having deep meaning in the work I do is of utmost importance to me. The most important thing I’ve learned is that I'm not myself when I'm not able to serve others.
So do what I did – reach out. Open that door, even if it’s a little bit, and let me help you find your own gifts. It will change your life. It won’t always be easy and it’s usually not fast. But each step we take each day towards being ourselves is a step towards truly letting our inner being shine. And when you shine, the world shines.
